The Spirit of Light Award
2003/2004
Lisa D. Hansen
This year's Spirit of Light Award winner exemplifies the title and intent of this award. Lisa Hansen lights up a room when she enters, and to those fortunate enough to know her, she lights up our lives beyond description.
Lisa first came in to our lives at the Blind Childrens Center in 1993 as a member of our Board of Directors. She quickly captured our hearts as she took on one leadership position after another. No matter what she was "organizing," Lisa always had plenty of support. Who wouldn't want to work with her? Her exceptional sense of humor, attention to every detail, and extensive organization guaranteed success. And "success" is a humble statement.
Ever cheerful, fun, positive and charming, Lisa accomplished task after task. This Tom Sullivan Blind Childrens Center Celebrity Tournament is celebrating its 12th year due to Lisa's leadership and commitment to our special children. Year after year, she led us to victory — always mindful of the serious need of funds to support the children, yet lifting our spirits to encourage new and exciting challenges.
From 1998 to 2000, Lisa held the position of President of the Board of Directors. As she faced new and more momentous challenges, each embodied her genuine warmth and concern for a better education for the children and their parents, a better experience upon entering this new world of visual impairment, and a better understanding of how to embrace this new world of special education. All the while as she led the Board of Directors, Lisa continued as chairman of the golf tournament.
Of course, her life outside the Blind Childrens Center was demanding with volunteer activities galore, including Trustee and Chairman of the Norris Foundation, Board member and president of Friends of the Banning Museum, Guild President and 11-year member of Little Company of Mary, several committees of Las Floristas, member of LA Music Center's Blue Ribbon, lifelong member of the USC Trojan Family and, always, a devoted sports enthusiast, especially for the Green Bay Packers.
We are grateful for Lisa's spirit and devotion and thrilled tonight to present her with the esteemed Steve Garvey Spirit of Light Award. Congratulations, Lisa!
