The Spirit of Light Award

The Steve Garvey Spirit of Light Award was created in Steve Garvey’s honor to be given to the person who exemplifies Steve’s dedication and service to the Center and to the community.

Gregory J. Mack

Gregory J. Mack has lived all of his life in Buffalo, New York. He has a degree from the University of Buffalo in Political Science with a teaching certificate. Greg was also a police officer, substitute teacher and high school soccer coach (all at the same time) before he entered the life insurance business more than 26 years ago.

Greg married Rosemary in 1979 and has raised two daughters. Lindsey, 23, who is a teacher completing her Master’s degree in Differentiated Education and Stephanie, 18, who attends New York University.

Greg has happily supported all his daughters’ creative endeavors, including seventeen years of ballet performances, choral concerts and school plays. He was an active member of his daughters’ schools’ PTAs and was willing to take on any assignment. He and his wife Rosemary founded the Cheerleader Booster Club at the local High School when public money became tight and the team needed support.

Greg has always had a love of sports and continues to play hockey and basketball today. His love of sports served him well as a volunteer coach for Little League Baseball through college and again when his daughters began playing softball. He has also actively supported Amherst Youth Soccer as a volunteer coach for ten years.

Greg has a passion for theater and the arts and has supported local theater as well as national causes like Broadway Cares, Equity Charities and the Actors Fund. Greg is a major supporter of Buffalo’s Shakespeare in the Park providing free summer theater as well as support and education of children with in-school programs. He also supports Studio Arena, Shea’s Buffalo, and the Buffalo Philharmonic.

He has been an active supporter of Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo as well as the Hospice Foundation for many years, where he has visited children living with cancer during the holiday season. In 2003 with his wife and daughter he traveled to Jamaica to build wheelchairs for those in need through the Million Dollar Round Table and the National Wheelchair Foundation.

Currently in his role at John Hancock as Senior Vice President, Sales and Distribution, Greg is able to support many other worthy organizations. After meeting Tom Sullivan at a speaking engagement for John Hancock in 2006, Greg was instrumental in having John Hancock become the title sponsor for this great event.

We applaud Greg for his generous contributions to the community and especially to the very special children at the Blind Childrens Center. We are pleased to honor Greg with The Steve Garvey Spirit of Light Award.
