VIDEO: MAKING THE SENSATIONAL HAPPEN 08:22 05/07/2009
How do you describe the color GREEN to a child who is visually impaired?
How do you teach him to NAVIGATE his way through a world that is designed for people who are different than he?
How do you provide him with all the tools he will need to THRIVE in this world, rather than just survive?
At the Blind Childrens Center, we answer these questions everyday; with every TOUCH, every SOUND, and every MOVEMENT we make.
We make the sensational happen
and place the world at the fingertips of
our students.
If children who are fully sighted learn up to 80% of their skills through visual cues and imitation of actions, how does a child who is blind learn?
Through her senses…
Alternative techniques need to be taught to a child who is blind. Trained
professionals are needed for a child to learn.
SOUND
Learning to listen to the sounds and echoes her steps make, a blind child
receives information about the space around her.
MOVEMENT
Blind children are encouraged to obtain information about their world largely
through movement.
TOUCH
Learning to use their hands prepares our students to learn advanced skills
such as Braille reading and writing.
MUSIC
Music is an interactive experience for a blind child and actually builds
new pathways in the brain.
