Our Plan for GREEN Design

We are proud to be building a Greener Future

The modernized and expanded Blind Childrens Center will embrace green architecture and building materials. This will create an eco-friendly learning environment in which our children will thrive. Taking our cues from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and the California Energy Efficiency Standards, the Center is working with our architect and construction firms to ensure that the new additions provide a healthy and safe environment. The use of recycled content and energy-saving practices, wherever possible, will benefit our children and our planet.

The Benefits of GREEN Building

Eco-Friendly Materials Are Better for Our Kids’ Health!

The children at the Center have many health issues. Therefore, we are committed to using Low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), which exhibit low levels of “out gassing,” in our paints, adhesives, and flooring material. This will improve air quality, help prevent mold, and reduce or eliminate the health effects of allergies and asthma. In addition to these materials, we will arrange our construction schedule in order to minimize disruption for the children and staff, further removing them from risk of exposure to construction dust and residue.

Eco-Design = Energy Efficiency

We have integrated several energy saving elements into the building design in order to reduce costs and help conserve precious resources.

Our Plan for GREEN Design

Design Elements

The building design maximizes the use of daylight, views to the outdoors and natural ventilation.

High-insulating, diffuse-light transmitting fiberglass panels with clear casement windows take advantage of daylight, decreasing the need to switch on lights.

Integrated operable windows increase
health-promoting natural ventilation.

Acoustical ceiling tiles absorb noise from floor and wall surfaces.

Artificial materials used in landscaping decrease water usage and prevent chemicals from seeping into groundwater.

Materials

• Low VOC Paint

• Low VOC Flooring (compliant to California Section 0135 with third party certification and LEED eligible)

• Low VOC Flooring Adhesives
