On February 26th, 2005, our Board and Committee member, Lawrence Meyer, participated in the 7th Annual Antarctica Marathon, a frigid-footed tour over gnarly hills, through icy streams and up and down the ominous Collins Glacier. Taking place on King George Island off the Antarctic Peninsula, the marathon's double-loop course also features a tour through Russian, Chilean, Uruguayan and Chinese scientific research base grounds. Larry completed the Antarctica Marathon in 7 hours. The temperature was 30 degrees when he began and dropped to zero by the end of the race. He was one of 190 globetrotting athletes from 13 countries who traveled an average of 8,000 miles each by land, air and sea to run this marathon on what is known as the coldest, windiest, iciest and most remote continent on earth. Race day conditions typically feature bone-chilling cold, drifting snow and gale-force winds. Runners also encounter penguins, seals and the predatory brown skua during their icy trek. Known as the "Last Continent," Antarctica boasts a two-mile-thick ice cap, spectacular scenery and challenging terrain. Getting to the race is half the fun and as much of the challenge. On February 18 runners will have taken overnight flights to Buenos Aires, Argentina, then fly to Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, the world's southernmost city. Runners will board a chartered ship for a ten-day journey through the Beagle Channel across the turbulent Drake Passage before settling into Antarctica waters. Larry dedicated this event as a fund-raiser for the Blind Childrens Center. He hopes to raise several thousand dollars on his own, and has asked that you consider making a pledge of $25, $50, $100 or more in support of this incredible undertaking. Please join us in celebrating this once-in-a-lifetime event by sending a donation on Larry's behalf to the children at the Blind Childrens Center. Congratulations, Larry! Contact Laurie
