DELTA GAMMAS HOST VALENTINE’S PARTY FOR THE BLIND CHILDRENS CENTER

LOS ANGELES, CA - On Friday, February 12, 2010, Delta Gammas from throughout Southern California hosted a Valentine’s Party for the children of the Blind Childrens Center.

The ladies brought healthy snacks and lots of Valentine’s cards and crafts for the kids to enjoy. The party was coordinated by the Delta Gamma Glendale/Burbank alumnae chapter. Volunteers from the following collegiate chapters came to play with the kids: Cal State Long Beach, Loyola Marymount University, USC and UCLA.

The Blind Childrens Center is a non profit family-centered agency devoted to helping children, who are blind or visually impaired, have the best quality and most productive lives possible. The Center’s programs and services help the children, from infants through 2nd grade, acquire skills and build their independence.

GOLFERS TAKE TO THE COURSE FOR BLIND CHILDREN

Fifteen golfers hit the course at the San Gabriel Country Club to raise funds for the Center.

SAN GABRIEL, CA – On Thursday, January 7, 2010, fifteen golfers hit the course at the San Gabriel Country Club to raise funds for the Blind Childrens Center. The Gibney Family Foundation once again challenged the golfers to raise $100,000 to benefit the Center’s new 2nd grade program. The day began at sunrise with breakfast, followed by a round of golf. After a short break for lunch, the golfers resumed play for another 18 holes, concluding with a dinner buffet and awards presentation.

SANTA CLAUS AND HIS LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT ELVES PROVIDE YOUNG BLIND CHILDREN WITH GIFTS, FOOD, AND FUN AT THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY WITH SANTA

Santa arrived in a police car with lights flashing and sirens blazing.

LOS ANGELES, CA - The 38th annual Holiday Party with Santa was held on Friday, December 11, 2009 at the Blind Childrens Center. The party was kicked off by Santa arriving in a police car with lights flashing and sirens blazing. Santa was greeted by the Center’s children, parents and staff who helped unload the vans full of toys donated by the officers and staff of the Rampart and Records & Identification Divisions of the Los Angeles Police Department. This year, LAPD’s football team, The Centurions, also joined in on the fun. The Holiday program included visits with Santa, entertainment by the classes and dining on a delicious lunch provided by the officers.

LIONS CLUBS DONATE VAN TO THE BLIND CHILDRENS CENTER

The van was a joint fundraising effort between local area Lions Clubs and the Lions Clubs International Foundation.

LOS ANGELES, CA - On Wednesday, December 9, 2009, the Blind Childrens Center held a dedication ceremony for a new van that was presented to the Center by local area Lions Clubs. The ceremony, held at 10:30 a.m., included a presentation by Judith Olmsted Powell, Past District Governor, Lions District 4-L2. She explained the role of the Lions in the donation and introduced Lion Kenny Shu, Project Chairman and member of the East Valley Lions Club. Shu commented that the Lions Club theme for 2008 was “Miracles Through Service,” which guided their fundraising effort. “To me, this van project is the perfect example of Lions Clubs and members making miracles happen,” said Shu. The van was a joint fundraising effort between local area Lions Clubs and the Lions Clubs International Foundation. A representative from Congresswoman Judy Chu’s office (32nd district) presented Mr. Shu with a certificate of recognition for his work.

Lions Clubs who participated in the fundraising include: Alhambra, American Asian, Arcadia Chinese, Arcadia Host, City of Industry, City of Industry Royal, East Valley, Hacienda Heights, Hacienda Heights Dynasty, Long Beach Downtown, Los Angeles Chinese, Montebello, Rosemead, Rowland Heights, San Gabriel Taiwanese, San Marino, and Whittier. Additional individual Lions also donated to the cause.

LAPD Centurions Host Picnic For Blind Childrens Center Families

The LAPD’s Centurions football team sponsored a “Fall Family Picnic.”

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Police Department’s Centurions football team sponsored a “Fall Family Picnic” for the Blind Childrens Center families on Thursday, October 15, 2009. In addition to cooking and serving food for the children, the team also presented the Center with a check for $5,000.

The Centurions football team is a non profit organization whose goal is to play football to raise money for the Blind Childrens Center of Los Angeles. Through the Centurions efforts, more than $500,000 has been raised over the past 30 years. The Centurions are sworn LAPD officers who compete during their off time in a regional football conference against other police and fire agencies in the Western United States.

Volunteers, Dignitaries, and Students Celebrate the Opening of Two New Classrooms at the Blind Childrens Center

Celebrating the opening of two new classrooms at the Blind Childrens Center.

LOS ANGELES, CA - On Monday September 21, 2009, the Blind Childrens Center held the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony. Also honored for their outstanding contributions throughout the year were: Man of the Year Kenny Shu, West Covina Diamond Lions Club; Humanitarian of the Year Jeff Leitzinger, Econ One; Philanthropists of the Year Fred Fyten, Optima Graphics and Fred Sayeg, Fred Sayeg Inc.; and Dream Builder Al Banegas, Bancomer Construction, Inc.

Major donors Karla Baer from The Ahmanson Foundation and Jennifer Brown from The Eileen & Kenneth T. Norris Foundation cut the ribbon along with second grade students, Jennifer and Isabella.

Donors, friends and volunteers as well as Los Angeles Council President Eric Garcetti (13th district), Councilman Tom La Bonge (4th district), Fabiola Vilchez, Central Area Director of Mayor Villaraigosa’s office and Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell, LAPD were among the well wishers.
