BITTERSWEET TEARS OF JOY FOR FAMILIES OF THE BLIND CHILDRENS CENTER

LOS ANGELES, CA – On Friday, May 27, families and staff gathered around the small stage in the back playground at the Blind Childrens Center to celebrate the graduation of several students, including their first Second Grade Class.

"Graduation is always a bittersweet day," said Dr. Fernanda Armenta-Schmitt, Director of Education and Family Services. "We are sad to see them go but very excited for their future and new found independence."

Blind Childrens Center's program is designed to teach young children who are blind or visually impaired the skills they need to succeed in the world independently. For some of the graduates, vision impairment is only one of many struggles they deal with on a daily basis.

All of the students with visual impairment that graduated from the Second Grade program have come a long way from when they arrived at the Center as infants.

The graduates and fellow students presented a wonderful musical program for the families in honor of this special day. Tears were shed and children embraced as they are about to enter into a world where they will not only survive, but thrive.

The Blind Childrens Center is a non profit family-centered agency devoted to helping children, who are blind or visually impaired, have the best quality and most productive lives possible. The Center's programs and services help the children, from infants through Second grade, acquire skills and build their independence.

LAPD PROVIDES HOLIDAY CHEER FOR YOUNG BLIND CHILDREN

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Blind Childrens Center's 39th annual Holiday Party with Santa was held on Friday, December 10, 2010 at the Center. Santa made a visit with vans full of toys that were donated by the officers and staff of the Rampart and Records & Identification Divisions of the Los Angeles Police Department and the LAPD Centurions Football team.

The excitement started from the moment Santa arrived in a squad car followed by a stream of squad cars with sirens blaring. Activities included visits with Santa, toy donations from the officers and staff of LAPD and holiday performances by the students. A delicious lunch was graciously donated by Lauren Fricchione, Jason Cestaro and Mike Gans, the owners of Smoke City Market in Sherman Oaks.

Smoke City Market was fortunate enough to receive sponsorship from some of their suppliers: John Macdonald, Steve Hoyt and Steve Magidow of Rancho Foods, and Brian Perlman from Sysco.

CYCLISTS RIDING OVER 500 MILES TO RAISE MONEY FOR BLIND CHILDREN
Two San Francisco men took a 10 day bike ride to benefit the Blind Childrens Center in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA—On Sept. 27 at 8 a.m., San Francisco locals Dylan Cannon and Justin Miller took off on their bikes from Four Barrel Coffee, located at 375 Valencia St. in the mission district of San Francisco down to San Diego as a benefit ride for the Blind Childrens Center in Los Angeles, a nonprofit school for blind and visually impaired children, for the second year in a row.

"We have selected the Blind Childrens Center as our beneficiary because they are locally based in California, are reputable and well established since 1938, and primarily, because an experience such as taking in the beauty of the California coastline by bicycle is an experience most of these children will never have," said Dylan Cannon on why they chose Blind Childrens Center to fundraise for.

The two ambitious young men surpassed their goal of $5,000 by over $400. This is double the amount they raised last year which was just over $2,500.

They asked friends, family, and local members of the community for individual sponsorships of only $10 (one dollar for every day of riding). Many people generously donated even more than they were asked.

Dylan and Justin arrived at the Center at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 5th. They spent time visiting the first grade class and showing their bikes to the children at recess. The children were amazed by the big bicycles and quickly befriended the riders.

They arrived safely in San Diego and the Blind Childrens Center is so thankful for all the hard work put forth by these two wonderful young men. We are looking forward to building the tradition for years to come.
