LAPD Honored at Blind Children’s Center Fall Golf Classic
San Gabriel, CA – On November 14, 2016, friends of the Blind Children’s Center took to the greens of the San Gabriel Country Club for the 4th annual Fall Golf Classic. A record-breaking amount was raised this year to support the Center’s educational programs for children who are blind or visually impaired. Presented by the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers’ Charities (LATLC), the event honored local heroes from the Los Angeles Police Department for their longstanding support of the Center and its students.
During the past four decades, the LAPD Rampart Division, LAPD Records & Identification Division, and LAPD Centurions Football Team have made incredible contributions of both time and financial support enabling the Center to provide critical services to hundreds of students who are blind or visually impaired. One LAPD tradition the children of the Center look forward to is Santa’s annual visit bearing presents. This year’s event honored retired Sergeant Jack Rose for his 25 years as Santa and Officer James Norton for donning the white beard and red cap these past three years.
“Over the last four years the Fall Golf Classic has become a truly special and important annual event to support the children of the Center,” Blind Children’s Center Executive Director, Lena French, said. “Thanks to the generosity of all the golfers, sponsors, and volunteers we were able to have a successful event that also recognized the support of the LAPD.”
More than 90 participants enjoyed a variety of on-course competitions in addition to 18 holes of tournament play. Following this great day of golf were the live and silent auctions of specially-donated items from the LAPD, including an officer patrol car ride-along and a police tactical training day. A very special and exciting item was the officer-led LAPD helicopter tour of the city, which brought in the largest donation of the day.
Thanks to the generosity of the event’s title sponsor, LATLC, the day culminated with an exciting awards ceremony congratulating the winning golfers and honoring Captain Jeff Nolte from LAPD’s Rampart Division, Mr. John Galitzen, Management Analyst II from Records & Identification, and Marc Rojas from the LAPD Centurions Football Team. Every LAPD officer in attendance was decorated by the event’s chair and MC, Kevin Griner, with an honorary medal.
“Being a part of the Blind Children’s Center’s Fall Golf Classic committee this year was truly an honor,” LAPD Officer Marc Rojas, said. “The Center provides a special environment for the children that the LAPD is proud to support.”
