Graduation

On June 20th, the Center held its 70th graduation ceremony for those children moving on from the Center. The morning began with the donation of a generous check of $5,000 from the North Hollywood Lions Club presented by Mr. Fred Beck, President, and Dr. Darrel Estes. The North Hollywood Lions have supported the Center since 1950 and have donated nearly $300,000 for our children.

The ceremonies continued with Center graduate, Karen Arcos, singing the Star Spangled Banner. Each classroom added to the festivities by performing a song or dance directed by our music specialist, Cuca. This was followed by the presentation of the graduates and their families.

Occupational Therapist, Jill Brody, was recognized for her 17 years of service at the Center. Jill will be retiring this summer. “Jill will always be part of our Blind Childrens Center family and we thank her from the bottom of our hearts for her dedication and her love for our children,” said Lena French, Assistant Executive Director.

Lizbeth Flores and Faviola Lara were presented with the Carlos Martinez Award. This recognition is awarded to individuals who have shown an outstanding capacity in specific areas that render them a model and leader among parents of young children with disabilities.

Parent, Noemi Estrada, gave a warm talk about her family’s experience at the Center. She thanked the Center staff for their inspiration and assistance to her family.

Special thanks to Center board member, Sandy Hubert, for the very thoughtful backpacks she assembled for each of the graduates. Also many thanks to Leila Ford and friends from AT&T Telephone Pioneers who brought paper goods, decorations, and gifts for the graduates.
