A Mother, Her Autistic Child, and the Music that Transformed Their Lives
Written by Cathleen Lewis [Hardcover]

Rex has played in front of thousands of people around the world, and was this year featured on CBS-TV’s “60 Minutes.” The show coincided with the publication of a book by his mother, Cathleen Lewis, about their life together: “Rex: A Mother, Her Autistic Child, and the Music that Transformed Their Lives.”

Lewis, who has been raising Rex alone for 11 years, wrote the book to give readers an idea of what their journey has been like.

In it, she tells of how Rex was born with a cyst on his brain, and how she and her then-husband received one piece of bad news after another. Even after surgery to remove the cyst, they learned he would be blind. When he was 18 months old, they learned he was autistic.

“The progression of our lives was just blow after blow after blow,” Lewis said. “Our marriage fell apart.”
