A Year of Growth and New Beginnings at the Blind Children’s Center
2024 has been transformative for the Blind Children’s Center (BCC): a year that celebrated growth, community and new beginnings. As the school opened its doors in September to the laughter of students exploring their brand-new classrooms, it was clear that the year’s accomplishments were not only milestones but also a testament to the Center’s commitment to empowering children of all abilities.
This transformation began with the ambitious dream to renovate and expand BCC’s historic campus while preserving its architectural roots. Through a $7 million capital campaign, supported by public and private partnerships, that dream became a reality. The completed building masterfully blends modern innovation with timeless design, honoring the renowned architect Paul R. Williams. The result is a space that inspires both learning and belonging — a place where children can explore light tables, texture books and sound-responsive toys, designed with accessibility and creativity in mind.
“Our goal was to create a place where every child feels empowered to learn, grow and dream,” said Chief Executive Officer Sarah Orth. “The completion of this project is a promise to our students and families that we will continue to evolve and innovate to meet their needs.”
The new facility opened on September 9, ushering in the 2024-2025 school year. For the students and families who rely on BCC, the upgrade represented more than a physical change. It marked the beginning of a new chapter, one where the possibilities for growth feel endless. Even during the extensive renovation process, BCC’s dedication never wavered; the Center continued to provide full services, ensuring that no child or family felt left behind.
Among the year’s most exciting developments was the introduction of a Toddler Program. With the addition of four new teachers, this program focuses on encouraging young children to learn through play in a nurturing environment. The classrooms were thoughtfully designed to build confidence and meet toddlers at their developmental stage.
The story of 2024 would not be complete without mentioning the community that surrounds and uplifts BCC. On November 1, BCC celebrated its Grand Reopening, showcasing its modernized space designed to better serve the education and development needs of students. December brought the 53rd annual Holiday party, an event filled with holiday crafts, visits with Santa and the warmth of familiar faces. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Rampart and R&I (Records & Identification) Divisions, partners for over four decades, delivered gifts collected through their Rampart Toy Drive, spreading holiday cheer to those in attendance.
As the year comes to a close, BCC looks ahead to 2025. The journey is far from over. The successes of 2024 are not endpoints, they are the building blocks for a brighter future. For further information about BCC, visit https://www.blindchildrenscenter.org/.
