Blind Children’s Center is Strengthening Communities Through Head Start
This February, Blind Children’s Center (BCC) welcomed Congresswoman Laura Friedman for an inside look at how the Head Start program is transforming the lives of children and families. As a proud member of the Head Start community, BCC provides an inclusive learning environment where children of all abilities can learn, grow and thrive.
Head Start, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, plays a crucial role in shaping brighter futures for children nationwide. The federally funded program provides comprehensive early childhood education, health services and family support to low-income families, increasing the likelihood that children graduate from high school and pursue higher education. Research shows that every $1 that is invested in Head Start yields $7 in long-term benefits, making it one of the most impactful early education programs in the country.
During her visit, Congresswoman Friedman toured the BCC campus, met with students and even read a storybook to a class. Chief Executive Officer Sarah Orth highlighted the unique challenges faced by children with visual impairments and the vital need for continued federal investment in inclusive early education initiatives.
“Head Start is about more than just early childhood education — it is a lifeline for nearly 800,000 American families and a cornerstone of strong communities,” said Orth. “For BCC, advocating for these programs means providing children with endless possibilities.”
Friedman praised BCC’s dedication, saying, “The work at the Center is truly transformative. Seeing the impact firsthand is inspiring and I encourage others to visit and experience the positive environment for children who are visually impaired.”
BCC offers both Early Head Start and Head Start programs, serving children from 18 months through 5 years old. These programs go beyond the classroom by involving the entire family, including siblings, parents, caregivers and grandparents. By supporting both children and their families, programs like these create lasting, positive impacts that extend far beyond the classroom.
