Celebrating Head Start Awareness Month With The Blind Children’s Center

Every year, thousands of children begin their educational journey with the support of Head Start programs. As September comes to a close, Blind Children’s Center (BCC) looks forward to October, recognized nationwide as Head Start Awareness Month—a time to honor the vital role these programs play in preparing children from low-income families for success in school. BCC is proud to be part of the Head Start community and offer its services to young children in Los Angeles.

“At BCC, we are committed to supporting the healthy development of children with varying abilities from birth to age five,” said BCC Chief Executive Officer Sarah Orth. “Our programs focus on the overall well-being of the child and their family, offering health services, mental health services and nutritious meals that help lay the foundation for lifelong success.”

President Lyndon B. Johnson established the Head Start program in 1965, and President Ronald Reagan designated October as Head Start Awareness Month in 1982. Initially launched as an eight-week demonstration project, Head Start aimed to meet the emotional, social, physical and educational needs of preschool children. A key goal of the program is to foster community, with programs encouraging local involvement through service and donations.

“As we celebrate Head Start Awareness Month, we reflect on the progress BCC has made over the years, including sharing Head Start’s commitment to reaching our country’s most vulnerable children and families,” continued Orth. “We look forward to a future of growth, support and opportunity for the children and families we serve.”

This October, BCC invites families to explore opportunities provided through its Head Start program and help set up blind and visually impaired children for lifelong success.
