Students and families thrive at the Blind Children’s Center!
Founded in 1938, the Blind Children’s Center (BCC) provides FREE, early learning programs for children from birth to 5 years-old and support for pregnant mothers. Our programs are funded through the Office of Head Start and CA Dept. of Education.
BCC is the only program of its kind in Los Angeles for young children who are blind or visually impaired. Our specialized programs combine early intervention, early childhood education and comprehensive family support services. We bring children with vision loss, autism, disabilities and/or complex medical conditions together with their typically developing peers to create inclusive environments where all children can experience belonging and reach their fullest potential.
The Blind Children’s Center offers:
- Customized education that caters to various levels of visual impairment and disabilities, focusing on enhancing academic and life skills.
- Individualized support designed to meet each child’s unique needs.
- A family-centered approach that actively involves parents and guardians in the educational process.
- Inclusive environments where sighted children are integrated into each class to promote social interaction and skill development.
- Access to health and disability services, including sensory development, orientation and mobility, occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech/language development to foster holistic development.
- A multidisciplinary team of experts who use leading-edge technology and adaptive devices to support students in their development.
Read what some of our parents say about BCC:
“The opportunity of having my twins in a mixed classroom with typical and special needs children was amazing. Our special needs child got to interact with all children instead of being segregated due to his medical conditions. As for my daughter who is typical, she learned great empathy and understanding of others with disabilities.”
“My daughter was born with a genetic syndrome which came not only with vision impairments but hearing, developmental and structural anomalies. BCC has been a solid support system for navigating all the concerns and needs of my daughter. BCC helped us understand where she needed support and had the resources to implement that support.”
“I was so happy to have found a safe brick and mortar place to go with my baby, and having weekly sessions with my parent educator at BCC was the highlight of my week. Getting out of the house for me personally (and I know to be true for other parents of young babies) was very important to my mental and emotional health because the early months through the first year can become very isolating.”
